Why I Joined Neocities

Neocities seems like a hip and happening place, and I think it's cool to have my own personal site away from regular social media. It gives me the freedom to put whatever I want on it!

I took a web design class in high school where we learned HTML5, but I'm pretty sure I've forgotten a lot of it. What do I remember about it? Well, my teacher's name was Mr. Cdebaca. He was nice. He liked Ferris Bueller's Day Off. There was a girl who sat next to me named Raquel. After she did her class assignments, she would usually either go on Poptropica or read Zoey 101 fanfiction. She was nice, and I hope she's doing all right these days. I haven't spoken to her in years. I think she signed my yearbook.

I generally did well on the assignments. They would usually involve creating a website and making sure it was formatted a certain way (using the correct colors, text, etc.). One of the webpages I made was about pandas. We also sometimes did PowerPoint presentations. One of them was on open and closed source programs. There was also one time where we played around with Flash. I made a short animation about two fish falling in love and getting married. On one of the last days of class, we watched WarGames, a movie from 1983 starring Matthew Broderick. I don't think I saw all of it.

I also took a programming class for one semester in college and admittedly didn't really enjoy it. It could be for a number of reasons. I was kind of stressed out by real life stuff at the time, and I didn't find the teacher very engaging. We learned C++. I somehow made an A in the class, and yet I haven't retained much of it to this day.

I also have played around with Ren'py, which apparently uses Python, so I guess I could say a tiny bit of experience programming with that.

I think that C++ class scared me off programming for a while, and I still can't say that coding is a passion of mine. But I feel like learning it at my own pace can be rewarding. I'd like to get better at it.

I'm hoping that creating this website will spark my memory on how to do a bunch of HTML stuff as well as teach me new things about it! I did the little tutorial that Neocities recommended, which was a short comic with their cute mascot character. Otherwise I've been trying to learn more through some other resources.
